Mercer, Jane: Labeling the mentally retarded; Clinical and social system
perspectives on mental retardation. University of California Press 1973
Based on an eight year study that used IQ tests to screen 7,000 people for
mental retardation, Mercer discovers that schools label people mentally retarded
more than any other institution, that minorities are over-represented in the
category of mental retardation, and that after leaving school most people are no
longer included in this category.
