The Kallikak Family

Goddard, Henry Herbert: The Kallikak Family (Classics in psychology). Ayer Co Pub 1973

This book was published originally  in 1912 by American psychologist Henry Herbert Goddard (1866-1957), and quickly became an international bestseller. In it, Goddard purports to follow the family trees of two families; both fathered by a Revolutionary War veteran named Martin Kallikak Sr. Kallikak's marriage to a virtuous Quaker woman produced a line of upright and respectable citizens. However Kallikak, during his time in the colonial militia, had a liaison with a feeble-minded tavern maid, and through her, produced a line of thieves, alcoholics, syphilitics and prostitutes - most of whom were feeble-minded.

Goddard's analysis was that feeble-mindedness was an inherited condition, producing defective degenerates. In his conclusion, the author suggested two possible solutions: mandatory sterilization, and mass incarceration. Goddard turned his mind later, but the damage was already done. About 60,000 people were sterilized in the United States,  62,000 in Sweden and 350,000 in Germany.
